The case U.S., et al. vs. Alabama, et al. (CV-83-M-1676-S) was filed on July 11, 1983, in the U.S. District Court, Northern District, Southern Division. The plaintiffs, the U.S. Justice Department and private class, allege that the defendants were maintaining a racially dual system of public higher education in violation of Title IV of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The defendants include the State Board of Education, Calhoun State Community College, Athens State College, and all state four-year colleges. As the administering agency for the Alabama College System, the Department of Postsecondary Education is involved in the litigation. This series consists of the case files created during the process of preparing this case for trial.
